French Drains: Keeping Your Yard Dry and Your Foundation Safe

Casement Windows

Not having proper drainage can lead to a multitude of issues around your yard and home. Many times, simply diverting the water can make a huge difference as well as save thousands in foundation repairs. As a NDS Certified Drainage Contractor, Kansas City Siding & Windows has the knowledge and expertise to handle all of your french drain, downspout, grading & sump pump needs.

French drains (sometimes called trench drains or ditch drains) are a tried-and-true method for diverting unwanted water away from your property. They’re essentially underground trenches filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that collects and channels water runoff.

How Do French Drains Work?

  • Gravity: French drains rely on gravity. Water naturally seeps through the soil and into the gravel surrounding the perforated pipe. The holes in the pipe allow the water to enter and flow freely through the length of the drain.
  • Directed Flow: The pipe then directs the collected water to a designated discharge point, such as a dry well, pop-up emitter, or storm drain. This helps prevent water from pooling around your foundation or flooding basements.

When to Consider a French Drain

French drains are a versatile solution for a variety of drainage issues:

  • Foundation Drainage: Protect your foundation from water damage by installing a French drain around the perimeter of your home to help prevent cracks and leaks caused by hydrostatic pressure.
  • Landscaping Drainage: Does your yard have chronically soggy areas? French drains can effectively address puddles and mud caused by poor drainage.
  • Retaining Wall Drainage: French drains can also be installed behind retaining walls to relieve pressure from built-up groundwater.

What are the Benefits of French Drains?

  • Protects Your Foundation: By diverting water away from your foundation, French drains can help prevent costly repairs and water damage.
  • Promotes Healthy Lawns: Soggy lawns attract pests and disease. French drains create a healthier environment for your grass to thrive.
  • Minimizes Erosion: French drains help control water flow, minimizing erosion around your property.
  • Relatively Low Maintenance: Once installed, French drains require minimal maintenance.
